Tap-dancing, fruit, jogging, Pilates: Experts' health tips for 2010

BY NANCI HELLMICH

Here are some top fitness and nutrition experts' New Year's resolutions for living a healthier 2010:

Cedric Bryant, chief science officer for the American Council on Exercise:

"I am going to incorporate more variety and fun into my existing exercise routine with recreational sports activities such as racquetball, tennis, squash and basketball that I enjoyed in graduate school. I also plan to give Pilates and/or yoga a try."

Dawn Jackson Blatner, registered dietitian in Chicago:

"My 2010 eating resolution: Be more creative with fruit and vegetable recipes. . . . I have a list of fresh fruit and vegetable recipes, and I will try a new one each week so at the end of the year I will have tried 52 new recipes. . . . It's based on the idea that, if you fill up on nutritious fruits and vegetables, you will have less room to eat high-calorie junk."

Denise Austin, TV fitness expert, author:

"To vary my workout -- mixing it up constantly, from Pilates to yoga to boot-camp workouts to interval training to using kettlebells."

Elisa Zied, author of Nutrition at Your Fingertips:

"I have resolved to get back to tap-dancing. I vow to find a class . . . because dancing to show tunes brings back fond childhood memories. I may not have the skills I had at age 4, but I don't care. Tap dancing is so much fun."

Jim Pivarnik, president, American College of Sports Medicine:

"To do something every day to enhance my physical being through exercise -- jog inside or out, go for walks around campus, swim and lift."

Tim Church, director of preventive medicine research at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.:

"I'm going to put a treadmill in my office so I can walk on it during the day. I plan to set up a computer screen and walk while responding to e-mails."
